We were approached by a homeowner in Horton Heath, Wimborne, who had already secured planning permission and was eager to begin work on a bespoke oak-framed orangery. Their vision was clear from the start: a timeless, warm, and light-filled space that would feel like a natural extension of their home. They had specific features in mind, including two sets of engineered oak bi-fold doors and a custom-built oak roof lantern to maximise natural light.
Solution
Working closely with the client, we developed a design that brought their ideas to life while enhancing both functionality and visual appeal. Key features of the orangery included: • Two engineered oak bi-fold doors to open up the space • A handcrafted oak roof lantern to flood the room with daylight • Directly glazed full-height windows capped with air-dried oak for a traditional finish • A warm deck flat roof system with hidden guttering for clean, modern lines We also prioritised structural integrity, supplying full Structural Calculations to ensure the build met all Building Control requirements. The client worked from home full-time, so we adjusted our on-site schedule to minimise disruption. Our team kept the site tidy, reduced noise where possible, and maintained open communication throughout the project to ensure a smooth and respectful working relationship.
Outcome
The completed orangery now sits seamlessly alongside the existing property, providing a bright and inviting space for both work and relaxation. Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern detailing, the space delivers on both practicality and style—perfectly in line with the client’s original vision.
Feedback
After the build, the client asked whether the internal oak frame needed treatment. We explained that many customers leave the oak unfinished, allowing it to age naturally, though a wax or oil finish is also an option. We recommended testing a product on an offcut first to ensure the desired result.p>
